All Around Our School
BZZZZZZ!!!! Heather Park Middle School hosted its 2nd annual Spelling Bee ‘Spellathon’ on Tuesday night to decide which of the 13 dedicated and skilled spellers students would represent our school at the upcoming Canspell CanWest Regional Spelling Bee on February 27th. After 23 rounds of spelling, congratulations to our top three finalists: 1st:Halee S., 2nd: Duncan B. and 3rd:Tayler-Rae K. Thanks to teacher sponsors: Mrs. Bryce, Mrs. Aussem, Mr. Laupitz, Mrs. McGraw and Ms. Kania. A special appreciation to Ms. Sarah Foote, HPMS’s UNBC mentor for her support and dedication.
Congratulations to the 11 students from the badminton team from HPMS who attended a tournament in Kamloops the weekend of January 16th. Of the 320 entries, our team did amazingly well in the Novice age group—especially given that for most of them, this was their first-ever tournament. Singles Girls 1st place, B Flight: Courtney L; Doubles Girls 1st place, C Flight: Victoria K & Courtney L and Doubles Boys 2nd place, C Flight: Keith B & Tom W. Thanks to coaches Mrs. Davison and Mr. Prouse.
Mrs. Todd and Mrs. T-Allen would like to send a huge thank you to the handful of students (and their parents) from the ‘Me to We’ Leadership group who volunteered to serve breakfast at St. Vincent de Paul last Sunday morning. Not only did they sacrifice some sleep-in time to arrive by 7:30ish am, once there, they were hard working, friendly and completed a variety of tasks from washing dishes to preparing and setting out oatmeal, cold cereal and toast. You did HPMS proud!
Once again, under Mrs. McGraw’s guidance, 33 HPMS students, 4 parents and 3 other staff members will be enjoying a truly Canadian adventure as they experience Quebec City’s Winter Carnaval and a host of other activities in their jam-packed schedule from Jan.27th—to Feb.1st. Our students will meet their pen pals, and other highlights will include a toboggan slide, several walking tours including parliament hill and the St. Jean Baptist quarters and Place Royale, sports tube sliding and other winter activities at Village des Sports, and a dinner at an authentic sugar shack: La Cabane a Pierre. Bon Voyage!
